Vivitrol Treatment

Addiction Medicine Specialists located in Bothell, WA

During recovery from opioid or alcohol dependency, resisting the urge to use substances is one of the biggest challenges you’ll face. Vivitrol® is clinically proven to prevent relapse when used as part of a full-scale recovery plan.

Vivitrol® contains naltrexone, a medication that stops opioid medications from creating a “high.” Administered as a monthly injection, Vivitrol helps prevent relapse in patients recovering from opioid addiction. It can block heroin as well as prescription opioids including Morphine, Codeine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, and Hydrocodone. Vivitrol can also benefit patients recovering from alcohol addiction by reducing the urge to drink.

Naltrexone, the active ingredient in Vivitrol, blocks opioid receptors in the brain so you can’t get high when using opioids, and it also prevents opioids’ pain-relieving effects. Substantial clinical research has demonstrated its effectiveness in treating alcoholism by reducing the urge to consume alcohol, though the precise mechanism is still being studied.

Vivitrol is prescribed as part of a long-term recovery plan for patients who have completed detox. Typically, patients receive an injection once a month for several months. You might experience some discomfort, bruising, or swelling around the injection site that should subside within 1–2 weeks. Vivitrol will decrease your urge to use substances, but full recovery depends on your commitment to all aspects of your treatment plan.

When you see one of our providers for a substance use disorder, they begin with a comprehensive evaluation to determine which treatment methods are best for your individual needs. If Vivitrol is right for you, they incorporate it into a customized treatment protocol that also includes ongoing recovery support, holistic medical care, and referrals for counseling and mental health services.
